The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has finally come to decision on Wrestling giving the sport a provisional spot in both the 2020 and 2024. It was amazing to think that wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports and not the 1896 Olympics but the dirt ringed original Olympics of 708 B.C. was facing losing its Olympic spot to a sport like Karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding or wushu.
As a child who had the fortune and misfortune of wrestling in high school I was hurt by the notion of an Olympics with out wrestling. I have grown up in a wrestling family. My father who is from Iowa grew up a wrestler and passed the disease on to me. Wrestling is not a great TV sport and it is not well understood. But anyone who has seen the sacrifice and commitment that this sport requires felt the pain that the 7 month deliberation over the sports faith evoked.
With this reflection I am proud that the fraternity of wrestlers world wide have come together to wrestle this sport back into the games. I think no true words have been spoken about this sport than from Actor, Comedian and Sports Talk Show host Jay Mohr a former high school wrestler.
Glad to have wrestling back…but this serves as a reminder to utilize the focus, persistence and work ethic that wrestling has instilled in us to achieve our goals and maximize our time here on life.
